Emo Rockers Hawthorne Heights Cover ‘Butterflies’, Kacey Musgraves Approves [LISTEN]
Longtime emo rock group Hawthorne Heights are trying their hand at a slightly different on their new two-song cover project, Dads of Sad, which came out on Monday (July 15.) The record features the band's renditions of two out-of-genre songs: "Butterflies" by Kacey Musgraves and "8" by pop star Billy Eilish. Musgraves may not make emo, but that doesn't mean she's not a fan: The singer took to Twitter on Monday after the project's release to share her excitement that Hawthorne Heights had chosen to cover her song. "GUYS I'M FREAKING OUT," she wrote. "I just cried at the airport listening."
In fact, Musgraves is a longtime Hawthorne Heights fan, which the band says was part of the concept behind releasing Dads of Sad. "A lot of people are probably going to ask, why the hell is this band covering extremely current pop songs that sound nothing like their band," said frontman JT Woodruff, according to Billboard. "The answer is pretty simple. We tweeted at Kacey, just wondering if she had ever listened to us back in the day. And she tweeted some of our lyrics back to us. We thought it was pretty bada-- that musicians in different genres are still connected."
Eilish, whose song also appears on the two-track project, has a similar history with Hawthorne Heights. Though neither Eilish nor Musgraves' sound comes close to resembling the emo group's, they saw it as a fun challenge to reinterpret their songs from a different perspective. "We thought it was a great exercise in trying to make their happy pop songs sound like emo songs," Woodruff went on to say.
Musgraves' emo fandom shouldn't come as a complete surprise: The singer has long been vocal about her love of pop-punk and emo rock group Paramore, and even invited the band's lead singer Hayley Williams to join her onstage during a show at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium in early 2019.
