Eric Church's newest Desperate Man single, "Monsters," examines how those titular demons change throughout our lives. Readers can press play above to listen.

Church co-wrote "Monsters" with Jeff Hyde; Jay Joyce produced the track, while Arturo Buenahora Jr. is its executive producer. The more stripped-back song is a sparse meditation on fear, which Church tells iHeartRadio he wrote following a conversation with his older son Boone, who told his dad that he needed more light in his room before bedtime.

"That little bit of light is what made the difference, that’s the key. The overall theme of "Monsters" is that it’s not a big, blinding light — it’s this much light that made the difference," Church explains. However, after Church played the 2017 Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas, Nev., two days before a gunman killed 58 people and injured hundreds more on the final night of the event, he says "Monsters" "became more real to me."

"I've learned that the monsters ain't the ones beneath the bed," Church sings in the chorus of "Monsters," driving home his message that while it may be easy to scare off childhood monsters with a comforting parent, the demons of adulthood are not so easily conquered. As a parent of young children who has also faced some of the scarier aspects of being a grown up in the past couple years, the country star knows firsthand what he's talking about.

"Monsters" is Church's third single from his newest album, 2018's Desperate Man. The song follows the album's title track and the No. 1 "Some of It."
