The Abilene Police Department (APD) is ramping up traffic enforcement through the end of 2025, thanks to a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The initiative is part of an ongoing effort to reduce crashes, encourage safer driving habits, and protect everyone on Abilene’s roadways.

State-Funded Program Targets High-Traffic Abilene Roads

Through this TxDOT-funded initiative, selected police officers will focus on specific roads in Abilene for increased enforcement. The targeted areas include:

  • Winters Freeway (US 83/84) and Access Roads
  • North and South Treadaway Boulevard
  • South 1st Street and South 14th Street
  • Rebecca Lane, Dub Wright, and Arnold Boulevard
  • Buffalo Gap Road and Sayles Boulevard
  • North and South Mockingbird, Barrow
  • Ambler Avenue

Officers will rotate from month to month to cover all these heavily traveled roads. Furthermore, officers will be focusing on peak travel times when risky driving behaviors are more likely to occur.

APD Focuses on Three Dangerous Violations

During the enhanced patrols, officers will be watching closely for three primary violations that contribute to serious crashes:

  • Speeding
  • Distracted Driving (such as texting or phone use)
  • Seatbelt & Child Restraint Violations

They will also remain vigilant for DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) offenses, especially during weekends and holidays.

Police Urge Safe Driving Habits

Abilene Police are asking all drivers to stay alert, slow down, and buckle up, especially in high-enforcement zones. The department encourages defensive driving and reminds parents to double-check child safety seats for proper installation.

Abilene Police Public information Officer Rick Tomlin says, “Reducing crashes starts with some simple choices: drive sober, stay off your phone, and obey the speed limit.”

A Safer Abilene Starts With Us

The increased enforcement isn't just about writing tickets, it's about saving lives. The APD wants everyone to get home safely. So whether you’re commuting on Winters Freeway or picking up dinner along South 14th, keep your eyes on the road and your foot off the gas.
