William Michael Morgan may be in his early 20s, but the "I Met a Girl" singer has an old soul, which is apparent on his recent cover of Keith Whitley's "Don't Close Your Eyes."

Morgan recently visited the Bobby Bones Show and performed the Whitley classic flawlessly with his deep vocals for the radio outlet. Listen above as he tackles Whitley's 1988 No. 1 hit.

In an interview with Taste of Country earlier this year, Morgan spoke openly about singing the country classics around his home in Mississippi as a child. After hearing “El Paso” by Marty Robbins he was hooked. He began researching classic artists like Whitley and Merle Haggard and fell in love with traditional artists including Waylon Jennings and George Jones.

“I just fell in love with that sound, the realness of the lyrics and the way that you can be moved by the melody,” he recalls. “It didn’t matter who it was, you just immediately — within the first three words — you knew who was singing and you knew whether it was going to be a heartbreak song or you were going to be happy. You felt it. It was real.”

Morgan's current single is "I Met a Girl," which was written by Sam Hunt, Old Dominion's Trevor Rosen and Shane McAnally. He calls his version “hat country” and couldn't be happier about the song's reception.

“It’s been getting some pretty good response so far, and we just hope to keep on making music that is us and can relate to the people and that the people enjoy,” he says.
