What is the Appropriate Age for a Kid to Have a Facebook Profile?

I have a son who is 12, and he asked me one of those difficult questions the other day. “Dad, can I get a Facebook profile?”. I was unprepared. I told him I would think about it and let him know. That bought me some time to ponder the question: “What is the appropriate age for a kid to have a Facebook profile?”
Facebook requires that you be 13, right? But I know of kids who are younger and have profiles that are watched closely by their parents. I also know of parents who don’t care what Facebook thinks, 13 is too young to be on a social network.
So, what do you think? What age is good for a kid to have a Facebook profile? Help me, and the many other parents out there who are asked the same questions by their children?
