The song 'Luckenbach Texas' was written by Bobby Emmons and Chips Moman, Waylon Jennings producer. While most Nashville songwriters knew that the best way to get Waylon Jennings interested in one of their songs was to tell him he couldn't record it.

Chips used that reverse psychology on Waylon and told him “here’s a song that you can't cut because I've got it promised to someone else, but can I get your opinion on it?” It worked, Waylon took the bait and said "I'm gonna cut that song."

Moman later admitted he actually thought that Waylon might not want to record it because the lyrics referred to him by name, in addition to other artists like Willie Nelson, Hank Williams as well as songwriters Mickey Newberry and Jerry Jeff Walker.
