Vince Gill is joining the Eagles -- temporarily, at least. The country icon has been tapped by the band to fill the hole left in their lineup following Glenn Frey's death in early 2016.

Gill will perform with the Eagles, the Los Angeles Times reports, at the Classic East and Classic West festivals later this year. Frey's son Deacon will also help fill his father's shoes during the shows.

“In my mind, I always thought I’d have made a good Eagle,” says Gill. "But in a million years, I never would have seen this coming. It’s pretty surreal. I turned 60 recently, and to get to be a part of this amazing legacy of songs, that’s the greatest part of all this for me.”

According to the Eagles' manager, Irving Azoff, the idea of adding Gill to the band's lineup came about during December's Kennedy Center Honors ceremony, during which Gill helped pay tribute to the Eagles. Following Glenn Frey’s death due to complications from rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, and pneumonia in January of 2016, Henley insisted that there was no chance the band would reunite, but later hinted that Deacon Frey would be the only suitable stand-in for his father.

“While I was still in shock during some interviews after Glenn passed away, I did say that I thought that was the end of the band. But I reserved the right to change my mind," Henley now says. "Ralph Waldo Emerson said, ‘A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds' ...

"The primary thing is, I think Glenn would be good with it — with both of these guys," Henley adds. "I think he’d go, ‘That’s the perfect way to do this.'"

Classic East will take place in New York City, and Classic West will occur in Los Angeles, Calif., this summer. Visit Eagles.com for more information.
