We’re excited for former ‘Battlestar Galactica‘ head Ron Moore to get back into the Syfy game with the buzzy new horror series ‘Helix,’ and today the cable network has given us yet another reason. Fresh off his work on NBC’s ‘Hannibal,’ film and TV director David Slade will helm the pilot episode of Syfy’s ‘Helix,’ but just how soon can we expect to see Ron Moore’s latest work?

‘Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome’ may have proven something of a non-starter, but franchise veteran Ron Moore’s latest project has plenty of buzz all its own. Via Deadline, we’ve learned that ‘Hannibal,’ ‘Breaking Bad‘ and ‘Twilight‘ director David Slade will helm the pilot episode for Syfy and Moore’s ‘Helix,’ which was recently given a 13-episode order.

Produced by Sony Pictures TV and written by Cameron Porsandeh, Moore’s ‘Helix’  follows a team of scientists investigating a possible disease outbreak at an Arctic research facility who find themselves trying to protect the world from annihilation. Under showrunner Steven Maeda (‘LOST,’ ‘CSI: Miami’) the series will start production this summer for likely late 2013 debut.

The Houston Astros stink, but they don’t stink nearly as much as one of their vendors.

In a sight more disturbing than their play, a fan walked into the bathroom at Minute Maid Park recently to spot a snow cone vendor doing his business in a stall…with a box of his refreshing ice creamy treats on the floor in front of him.

That’s more repulsive than the team’s ERA.

The fan captures the incident on video and while part of us thinks it’s kind of disturbing for one man to record another man on the can, we can’t help but applaud him going all Paul Blart in the name of good hygiene.

After getting wind of the vendor’s action, the Astros fired him. Unfortunately, the rest of the team seems to still be employed, despite being so far out of a first place they need a periscope just to get a glimpse of .500.

As for the cones, let’s just hope no one bought the lemon flavor because we have our doubts that it really was lemon.

Trimming the guest list for a wedding is never easy, so you can only imagine the problem one couple with 25,000 people in attendance faced.

A wedding featured 25,000 guests on Wednesday night in Jerusalem. This was no Bridezilla demanding everyone she’s ever met be invited to witness her big moment. Rather, the nuptials were between Shalom Rokeach and Hannah Batya Penet. Who, you say? Well, Rokeach is the descendant of a wealthy dynasty with ties to the Jewish community, so this union turned into such a mammoth affair it made it seem as if Prince William and Kate Middleton swapped “I dos” down at city hall during their lunch hour.

The wedding was like a combination of a city on lockdown and one watching a concert — streets were closed and video screens were erected so people could see. Heck, by the time the bride and groom were done saying thank you to everyone who came, they’d probably gotten laryngitis.

The wedding festivities went until dawn, which immediately puts this bash in the top 10 of greatest parties ever.

Now, the hard part: how on Earth will the bride write all those thank-you notes without getting carpal tunnel syndrome?

Last night was the first ever public screening of ‘World War Z,’ this summer’s big zombie action-thriller. That would’ve been enough excitement for the fans in Hoboken, NJ who lined up for hours for their first look at the film. But they got an added surprise: Mr. Brad Pitt.

We were in attendance and after all the fuss, it turns out that ‘World War Z’ is actually…a pretty good movie.

“We gotta do a screening for the fans. So, we decided there was no better place to do that than Jersey!”

So said Brad Pitt late last night as he snuck into a late-night showing of ‘World War Z.’ The crowd, understandably, went nuts. But would they go nuts for the movie? This was the first time Paramount and Pitt (who also produced the film) had shown the movie to anyone outside of the production and they didn’t know what they had yet. But what they have in ‘World War Z’ is certainly a crowd-pleaser.

After a brief introduction to Pitt’s Gerry Lane and his family (wife Karen and their two girls), we hit the ground running and the movie is off. This is not a slow burn. The first 2/3 of ‘World War Z’ are a surprisingly entertaining zombie thriller. It’s intense and scary despite not being gory really at all. We’ve never really had a zombie movie of this scale before and it’s impressive to see a big disaster movie that isn’t aliens or giant robots but just lots and lots of zombies.

If you’ve heard any of the production problems the film has had, don’t believe the hype: ‘World War Z’ isn’t a disaster. But as a disaster movie, it’s actually pretty good.

The lyrics to Taylor Swift‘s hit song make 22 sound like a darn good time. Lots of late-night hangouts, dreaming of the future, acting silly with friends — what more could you want? Unfortunately, the reality for most is that early 20s aren’t nearly as fun as they look in the ’22′ music video — and Conan O’Brien takes issue with Swift’s gross misrepresentation.

Fed up with the sugar-and-spice lyrics about how great it is to be a 20-something, O’Brien took to his YouTube account to record a hilariously bitter response to Swift’s ’22′ video

“Taylor Swift’s great — she’s very popular and she’s very talented,” he says. “But I know what it’s like to be 22, and I don’t think that’s an accurate representation of being 22.”

For starters, O’Brien takes issue with the apartment in which the video takes place. In fact, it looks like the video is filmed in an awesome house, complete with a back wall full of huge windows and glass doors that open up to reveal an in-ground pool.

“When you’re 22, you’re not living in that apartment, alright? You’re living in a really crappy $380-a-month apartment in the mid-Wilshire district in Los Angeles,” O’Brien so aptly puts it, clearly speaking of his own life.

And he’s right. For most 22-year-olds, lounging at the pool for entire afternoons isn’t very productive. After all, you have non-paying internships to be at and part-time jobs to help you make (very little) extra cash.

Also, as O’Brien points out, there are no packs of Ramen noodles in Swift’s fun, happy-go-lucky ’22′ video. “That’s all you’re eating when you’re 22!” the redheaded talk show host exclaims.

Suddenly, O’Brien’s rant takes a turn for the sad. He begins waxing nostalgic about seeing bad movies, suffering from acne and being too skinny — problems the ‘Begin Again’ superstarlet doesn’t seem to have.

“There’s nowhere to go. There’s no one to talk to. You don’t have a girlfriend,” he digresses. “People are like, ‘Oh, you’re 6’4″? You’ve got orange hair? Who’s got orange hair? What kind of name is Conan? You’re a freak!’ ”

Apparently, Conan feels like his experience as a 22-year-old is the same as everyone’s. We’ll give it to him that Swift doesn’t have the typical experience, either. But for the rest of us, being 22 falls somewhere in the middle of confused bliss and tortured loneliness — or as Swift puts it, “happy, free, confused and lonely at the same time.”

We’d still probably have a hard time rattling off all the gems in the Infinity Gauntlet (OK fine it’s space, time, power, soul, reality and mind…) and we certainly didn’t even know the Infinity Gauntlet when we were in pre-school. But Mia not only knows about Jim Starlin’s six-issue miniseries from 1991, she can answer questions about it. It’s pretty impressive stuff. And to think our Dads complained whenever we asked them to drive us to the comic store…

She later drops some knowledge of ‘The Super Hero Squad Show’ which is probably how she’s getting this endless knowledge of Marvel trivia at such a young age. And the next time you wonder why Marvel is putting out toys and cartoons you think are for babies, this is why. In a few years, little Mia will be writing Marvel comics.

Just last month we gave you the famed ‘Ship Your Pants‘ Kmart commercial that created both headlines and guffaws around the country. Now the discount chain is back with a hysterical ad about the gas savings offered by Kmart. The commercial promises “big gas savings,” which as you might guess, sounds a little like something else…

The commercial is another win for Kmart. We can’t guarantee we’ll shop there, but we definitely won’t use the DVR to fast forward through their commercials anymore.

The concert film has gone out of vogue, so we’re curious to see if Metallica can resurrect the form with ‘Metallica Through the Never,’ which combines concert footage with the imagination/hallucinations/whatever of the main character played by ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘s Dane DeHaan. Here’s the first trailer, and it’s… interesting.

On the positive side of things is the music, which — at least for the trailer — is the song “Master of Puppets,” and that’s one of the band’s best. Perhaps if this leans more heavily on Metallica’s back catalog classics, it might be fun to sit through. If it’s mostly a live rendition of ‘St. Anger,’ we’re not as interested.

The big question is if the world Dane DeHaan’s character inhabits makes sense/is interesting within the context of a concert film. This is a 3D and Imax movie and the images suggest something metalheads may fantasize about, so it could be awesome in a laser light show way. We’ll see if it works when ‘Metallica Through the Never’ opens in Imax on September 27, and on regular screens October 4. Here’s the synopsis:

Starring Metallica, a cast of thousands of their fans and breakout star Dane DeHaan (Chronicle, The Amazing Spider-Man 2), Metallica Through the Never is written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Nimrod Antal (Predators, Kontroll) and produced by former IMAX film producer Charlotte Huggins (Journey to the Center of the Earth). The film marries groundbreaking footage and editing techniques with a compelling narrative, in which a band crew member (played by DeHaan) is sent out on a mission during Metallica’s roaring live set in front of a sold-out arena. While on this mission, he unexpectedly has his life turned completely upside down.

Though ‘The Hangover‘ may have inspired some raunchy comedies, few have matched the genius of the first film (including the most recent sequel). Watching the ‘We’re the Millers‘ trailer gives us hope that it could be as good (if not better) that any of the ‘Hangover’ movies.

‘We’re the Millers’ follows pot dealer David Burke (Jason Sudeikis), whose supplier Brad (Ed Helms) wants him to smuggle some great Marijuana from Mexico into America. David’s plan: Put it all in a camper, and pretend to be on a family vacation. So he hires his neighbors: the kid Kenny (Will Poulter), petty thief Casey (Emma Roberts) and stripper Rose (Jennifer Aniston) to play along. But, of course, it could never be so simple as crossing the border, and there are numerous pit stops and troubles in their way.

Directed by ‘Dodgeball’s Rawson Marshall Thurber (who’s been MIA since the failure of his adaptation of ‘The Mysteries of Pittsburgh’), this looks like a smart, funny and plot driven comedy that embraces its R rating with some amusing discomfort comedy, and a cast lined with ringers (on screen are Nick Offerman, Kathryn Hahn, and Ken Marino). We’re hoping it could be one of summer 2013′s most pleasant surprises. ‘We’re the Millers’ hits theaters August 9. Here’s the film’s synopsis:

David Burke (Jason Sudeikis) is a small-time pot dealer whose clientele includes chefs and soccer moms, but no kids—after all, he has his scruples. So what could go wrong? Plenty. Preferring to keep a low profile for obvious reasons, he learns the hard way that no good deed goes unpunished when he tries to help out some local teens and winds up getting jumped by a trio of gutter punks. Stealing his stash and his cash, they leave him in major debt to his supplier, Brad (Ed Helms). In order to wipe the slate clean—and maintain a clean bill of health—David must now become a big-time drug smuggler by bringing Brad’s latest shipment in from Mexico. Twisting the arms of his neighbors, cynical stripper Rose (Jennifer Aniston) and wannabe customer Kenny (Will Poulter), and the tatted-and-pierced streetwise teen Casey (Emma Roberts), he devises a foolproof plan. One fake wife, two pretend kids and a huge, shiny RV later, the “Millers” are headed south of the border for a Fourth of July weekend that is sure to end with a bang.

Earlier today CBS went through with a rather late pickup of the upcoming ‘Bad Teacher‘ adaptation, but the confirmed offerings for the network’s 2013-2014 slate have a few reveals of their own. The network has released extended trailers for Chuck Lorre’s ‘Mom,’ Sarah Michelle Gellar and Robin Williams‘ ‘The Crazy Ones‘ and more, so get your best look yet at CBS’s fall lineup inside!

You might have noticed we tend to avoid most of CBS’s three-camera sitcoms, making the eye network’s fall 2013 pickups full of single-camera comedies all the more intriguing. Today the network has unveiled a new slate of trailers for its upcoming offerings, among them David E. Kelley’s ‘The Crazy Ones,’ Will Arnett and Margo Martindale’s ‘The Millers,’ and Toni Collette thriller ‘Hostages.’

Regardless of the McDonald’s product placement, we’d be hard pressed to deny the appeal of ‘The Crazy Ones’ given the presence of SMG, Robin Williams and ‘Mad Men‘ mystery man James Wolk. The Kal Penn-starring “We Are Men’ certainly looks better than we initially gave it credit for, while Anna Faris and Allison Janney’s performances in the ‘Mom’ trailer help sell another winner for Lorre. We’re a bit less sold with regard to ‘Arrested Development‘s star Will Arnett’s turn in ‘The Millers,’ but we’d be willing to give it a try off the bat.

Having returned to the public sphere with his most recent Academy Award hostings and the upcoming ‘Monsters University,’ legendary comedian Billy Crystal will next head to TV full time. The ‘When Harry Met Sally’ funnyman will headline a new FX single-camera comedy pilot ‘The Comedians,’ but what about the creative team has the TV industry already buzzing?

FX has been steadily building toward more comedy additions, given the release of its upcoming spinoff network FXX this fall, and has tasked revered comedian Billy Crystal with spearheading the charge. We’ve learned that Crystal will star, write and produce in the single-camera comedy pilot ‘The Comedians,’ following a veteran comedian reluctantly paired with a younger, edgier comedian for a late-night comedy sketch show.

‘Seinfeld’ producer Larry Charles, ‘Burn Notice‘s’ Matt Nix and Ben Wexler (‘Community,’ ‘Arrested Development‘) will serve as writers and producers of the series along with Crystal himself. Says FX President John Landgraf of the news:

It truly is an honor to be in business with Billy Crystal and Larry Charles, two of the all-time greats in comedy. We have also wanted for some time to be in business with Matt Nix, who has done such an amazing job creating and running ‘Burn Notice.’ They, along with Ben Wexler, are an unbeatable team and we’re incredibly excited about this project.

Sometimes life takes a hard left turn into Awesometown, when you least expect it. When that happens in the middle of a uh…period of sexual freedom, there’s going to be some cleanup to do.

Four weeks ago I wrote an article about how I was only interested in casual sexual relationships. It was true, I swear. Thing is, shortly after publishing that post, I went on the best date I’ve ever been on. Not just a date, a date marathon that hasn’t stopped for weeks. Things have um, changed.

Lots of times, you hear people who are married or committed say that they don’t notice other people anymore, and honestly, I always kind of thought they were full of sh*t. I’m capable of being monogamous, but it’s always been a manual effort, from the very beginning. I was always  under the impression that when it was time to commit to one person, you made a decision, and worked on it daily. Since I met this person, I haven’t noticed anyone else, and I always notice.

However, listen; it’s been a busy winter. I’ve gone on a lot of dates, and also a lot of “dates” (sex), so there’s some cleanup to be done. Luckily, this dude and I had  a very similar winter, and so it’s not awkward when we get texts that we have to “deal with.” That openness and willingness to talk and laugh about those awkward conversations (both with people we were kind of “dating” and the 2am Saturday night booty-call texts) is part of why we’re getting so close; honesty is the best; it’s the freedom to be yourself and to trust other people to love you. Watching him be kind and honest has only made me respect him more than I already did.

I realized I was falling in love when I cared more about making sure that he really knew me, than I did about protecting my vulnerable parts, or hiding my flaws. In a very short amount of time, he knows things that I’ve never told anyone. Maybe love is the only beneficial kind of psychosis, but I’m fine with that being my legacy.

SORRY, I’m done being gross; now I’ll be helpful. If you’ve recently decided you’re ready to commit to someone and have some cleaning up to do, here’s a few nuggets of wisdom taken from the immortal Nada Surf song ‘Popular,’ which should help make the transition smooth and (as) painless (as possible). "Don't put off breaking up when you know you want to. Prolonging the situation only makes it worse."

 

 

 

It sucks to tell someone that you like someone else better, and if the Internet has taught us anything (really, it probably hasn't, but...) it is that stalling is a great way to avoid doing things that suck.

Think about the other person; remember that you do care about them, and don't want to see them hurt, and that's why you're stalling. Suck it up and tell them as soon as you know. Don't stall, make the call. (Sorry.)

"Tell [them] honestly, simply, kindly, but firmly. Don't make a big production. Don't make up an elaborate story."

 

 

 

Telling someone that you're "a mess" and "not in the right place to be in a relationship" feels good because it means you don't have to insult the other person, and you take all the responsibility. It's also the biggest mistake you can make.

Why? Because when someone likes you, they hear what they want to hear. If you tell them that you "are a mess," (particularly if they are caring people) they will want to "clean up your mess," and help you. This is not an effective exit strategy. You don't have to insult someone to end it with them. Repeat after me: I met someone. I can't see you anymore. Thank you for the time we spent together, I really enjoyed it, and I wish you luck. See? Easy.

"Be prepared for the [person] to feel hurt and rejected, even if you've gone together for only a short time, and haven't been too serious. There's still a feeling of rejection When someone says she prefers the company of others to your exclusive company."

 

 

 

Getting dumped blows; this person is going to be bummed out. It's okay to bum people out in the short term, because you're not going to give them what they want in the longterm, so why prolong the confusion?

IMPORTANT NOTE: As the person who hurt them, you cannot be the person to comfort them; that does not work. This is what their friends are for. Also be prepared for some of/all of their friends to hate you forever; that's their job, don't hold it against them.

"But if you're honest and direct, and avoid making a flowery emotional speech when you break the news, the boy will respect you for your frankness, and honestly he'll appreciate the kind of straight forward manner In which you told him your decision."

 

 

 

Keep it short and sweet, and let them know you thought about how to talk to them about it. They'll respect you, and most times wish you well, even through their sadness. Everyone wants to fall in love, and it's hard to be mad at someone else for managing to do it.

"Unless [they're] a real jerk or a cry baby, you'll remain friends."

 

 

 

FYI: I never met this dude, he was from OKCupid. He asked me on an actual date once, and I was busy. We never had sexy talk. He texted me 3 days ago and I ignored it, and when he texted again I decided to be nice and address it, ending the ambiguity. I added the the black box, because I am not a gross jerk, but clearly he is. Some people you come across are going to be gross jerks, but the good ones make up for it.

Okay comic book enthusiasts, it’s time to study up on that Marvel trivia because four-year-old Mia is up for a challenge.

Recently posted on Reddit, this video of a young girl answering questions from her father regarding various Marvel superheroes could easily make your geeky mind explode. If not from her immense knowledge of the Marvel universe than certainly from the perplexing family tree each hero seems to have. If you’re like us, than you were done after question one. Give us a break — at least we know who Thor is.

Looks like Mia is on her way to becoming the next big Marvel comic book writer — or else one serious trivia champ on “geek night.”

Zach Sobiech is singing with the angels now.

Zach died Monday at the age of 18 after a battle with cancer, but he left behind more than just memories for those who knew him.

After learning that he only had a few months to live, Zach decided to write music as a way to say goodbye. A lot of music. Eventually, he released an album on iTunes that featured the song ‘Clouds,’ which became a YouTube sensation and garnered a lot of interest among people who knew his story and even those who didn’t.

This video shows how extraordinary a person Zach was and makes you truly appreciate all you have. You can honor his legacy by donating to the cancer research fund he launched.

It’s not exactly the ‘Friends’ reunion fans have been expecting, but it’s still pretty amusing. 

On Thursday’s episode of ‘Ellen,’ America’s sweetheart Jennifer Aniston will be acting as co-host. In order to promote the show, the crew made a hysterical skit involving a few ‘Friends’ cast members — including Aniston, Matthew Perry and Courteney Cox — and some adult situations that most definitely would not have appeared on the NBC hit.

The group took the time to take a few light jabs at one another, all under the guise of Aniston asking Perry for some co-hosting advice. But what she got was much, much more.

If you ask us, our ‘Friends’ reunion hopes have been completely satisfied, even without an Gunther cameo.

You might recognize a few of these faces from last week, when we showed the man on the right, Karl Stefanovic, pranking his co-anchor from Australia ‘Today’ on the air. He’s back, and this time he’s trying to eat the world’s hottest pie.

If this confuses you, in Australia they make delicious savory pies, so it’s not like he’s eating a fiery strawberry-rhubarb pie or something. Although, the sugar would probably help with the burn, considering the sweat that breaks out all over his face, the fact that he can’t finish it, AND that it actually makes him feel sick. Nice try though, Karl.
