Nashville native Tristan McIntosh is hoping to be the next and final American Idol, and judging by the 15-year-old’s performance of Carrie Underwood’s “Good Girl” in the Top 24 on Wednesday night (Feb. 17), she may just do it. The spunky student took the stage looking country-rock chic with ripped jeans and killer hair, stepping out with confidence. The tune has a rock edge, so the song not only fit her look well, but showed off her pipes in a major way.

McIntosh nailed the quick vocal runs and belted the high notes with ease, all the while working the stage with the poise of an experienced artist twice her age. The audience ate it up, and the judges were impressed with her vocal talent — though they did have a few suggestions for her after the last note.

The song is fitting, though, as American Idol continues its final season and looks back at its past winners and the artists who have gotten their start on the vocal competition. Underwood herself won Season 4 of Idol, launching her to a level of superstardom unrivaled even by many of the other Idol alums. Several country artists in addition to Underwood have emerged from the Idol franchise, and the show is inviting back several of its past winners and veterans, including Kellie Pickler and Lauren Alaina, over the course of the season. Kelly Clarkson has said she plans to appear, which she had to choose over attending the Grammys due to her difficult second pregnancy. Underwood is also slated to make an appearance.

Judge and fellow member of the country family Keith Urban says though the show’s end is sad, he thinks it may not be completely over after the finale episode. Check out his reaction to McIntosh’s performance — which led her to the Top 14 — above.
