Tom Cruise and Joseph Kosinski May ‘Go Like Hell’

Tom Cruise may reunite with his ‘Oblivion‘ director Joseph Kosinski for ‘Go Like Hell,’ which would tell the true-life story of how Ford and Ferrari battled for dominance in the sports car market and championships at Le Mans. Cole Trickle redux?

This news comes from Deadline, and they mention that the film would be based on the book ‘Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari, and their Battle For Speed and Glory at Le Mans’ by A.J. Baime, which looks at the competition between the two companies during the 1960′s, with Ford using the rivalry to reinvent themselves. Perhaps the story focuses less on the races themselves but more on the evolutionary process of design, as ‘The Right Stuff’ is mentioned as similar in nature.

What’s fascinating about this is that the most successful recent movie about racing cars professionally (that isn’t ‘Cars’ or its sequel) is ‘Talledega Nights: The Story of Ricky Bobby,’ which was a satirical look at NASCAR. Tom Cruise’s own ‘Days of Thunder’ — which pretty much transposed the ‘Top Gun’ narrative on to a race track — was considered a disappointment in its day, while more recently Ron Howard‘s ‘Rush‘ tanked domestically, so this is an odd project. Perhaps there’s a strong international appeal to the material.
