After many months of paper shuffling and countless weeks of submitting written requests and hours of planning events and activities, a piece of history is finally coming to the Cross Plains library. One of the tires off of the Space Shuttle Columbia will be making at least a three year tour stop in the Big Country.

The Cross Plains Public Library announced that NASA granted a landing gear tire from the Space Shuttle Columbia to them. This tire is a piece of a touring 'Space Shuttle Tire and Exhibit'. After the tour is complete the tire and complete exhibit will find it's home at the Children's Discovery Center part of the library. The tire has traveled from Cape Canaveral, FL, to Manassas, VA to Atlanta, GA to Dallas, TX, then to Abilene before it arrived in Cross Plains.

'That long journey was paid for by the City of Cross Plains, the Barbarian Festival Committee, the Cross Plains Chamber of Commerce, Project Pride, the Cross Plains Economic Development Corporation and the Callahan County Historical Commission. However, this was not the tire's last stop; instead, the exhibit will travel to Cross Plains ISD schools and then to other area schools, libraries and museums in 2013. Currently, the tire is at an undisclosed location until the exhibit is completed; then, there will be a public unveiling with many more details to follow." Said Michelle Kaiser odf the Cross Plains
