First ‘Wolverine’ Clip: Hugh Jackman, a Speeding Train and Some Angry Yakuza

At the end of the day, ‘The Wolverine‘ has one job and one job only: to be better than ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine.’ Thankfully, that shouldn’t be too difficult of a task. In fact, the latest clip from director James Mangold‘s film is more impressive than anything seen in Wolverine’s previous solo adventure, even if it all feels a little familiar.

The clip is exactly the kind of thing you’d expect from a movie where Hugh Jackman‘s metal-clawed mutant superhero journeys to Japan and gets into all kinds of snikt-y mischief. Confronted on a train by a small band of Yakuza thugs, Wolverine does what he does best — he starts slicing and dicing guys with a vengeance. Because property doesn’t stay intact when superheroes are involved, the fight soon movies to the roof the speeding train, where Wolverine and a surprisingly resilient thug battle it out while shattering the laws of physics.

It’s fun. It’s fine. It’s exactly what you’d expect. Some of the effects are a little dodgy, but the fight choreography is solid and the action is cleanly shot. Mangold is a capable filmmaker who knows how to build a strong action scene and shoot it coherently (something that Gavin Hood never quite managed to do with the last one), so it looks like ‘The Wolverine’ will deliver the goods on that level. Of course, a capable if unremarkable action scene doesn’t tell us if the movie will actually be any good, but hey, this is an okay start.

‘The Wolverine’ arrives in theaters on July 26, 2013.
