Steven and Andrew McWilliams are fast becoming favorites of more than just the KEAN 105 Afternoon Show. Since Andrew's first visit to Abilene a year ago, their band, The Rusty Brothers have made major headway in getting noticed on the Texas music scene. The guys stopped by to promote their latest single, 'The Devil', plus play a couple songs for us.

The new single is actually an old song, given new life when The Rusty Brothers went back into the studio to re-cut it for radio. Steven explains, "In '08 we recorded an album...it never got the radio play. We didn't know what we were doing. It never really got heard outside friends, family and friends of friends...Bridgestone Tires actually out of nowhere picked up our song, 'The Devil' from our '08 album, and they put it on a prime time TV commercial...it ran through the World Cup a few times, the NBA Finals, hockey finals. It was a pretty cool little deal. [The commercial features] this big guy, his nickname is 'Pot Roast' [Terrance Knighton of the Denver Broncos], and he plays for the Denver Broncos and he's driving around in his Tahoe or whatever...and his dog turns on the radio, and it's a country song playing and it's our song. And Pot Roast is like, 'Oh, my dog likes country music.' You might have seen that. It's a unique commercial." The Rusty Brothers took this as a sign, as Steven goes on to explain, "So, we just ran with it. We were like, 'You know what. Let's do it. We always wanted this song to get airtime in '08 and '09 and it never did. Let's give it another shot. We went into the studio with [producer] Eric Herbst...cut it in about 2 days, and had it off to radio the next week."

In case you missed it, here's the Bridgestone Tire commercial featuring 'The Devil' by The Rusty Brothers:

We talked about an error in the printing of The Rusty Brothers' latest CD, 'Revival', and what happened when they first noticed that there was a glaring typo. Andrew jokingly explained, "These are special, limited edition records. We only printed about 40-50 thousand of these things...Just so everybody knows, there's a slight typo on ['Revival']. It may or may not be the name of the band on the record...We put a lot of work into it, and I remember we go the delivery right to my living room, a huge stack of boxes. I opened up the first one, got a big old smile on my face, and then I see this typo, man, and I about passed out right there. But we fixed the problem and turned [the typo version] into a special, limited edition record." The typo in question? The spine of the CD case has the name of the band printed "The Rusty Borthers". It's good that they can laugh about it now.

Steven and Andrew took time to perform a couple songs for us in studio, including 'Off My Mind' from their latest CD, 'Revival, and 'Old School Habits', which shows up on their first effort, 'Love, Guitars and Whiskey'. Studio versions of both of these songs are available on iTunes.

The Rusty Brothers like the country music fans in Abilene, and Abilene seems to like them pretty well, too. Steven tells us, "We've got to give a shout out to the folks of Abilene, too. Because we played a cool show a couple months ago [in Abilene] and it was awesome. It was cool. People here like their country music." And you can go to their Facebook page, mention that you heard The Rusty Brothers on KEAN 105, and they'll send you a free single.
