“The Newsroom” is a Must See Summer Televisiton Hit [VIDEO]

the newsroom

There was a new show that debuted last night on HBO after another one of my favorites True Blood. The new show is called “Newsroom” and it was absolutely the best show I’ve seen in a very long time.

The show is written by Arron Sorkin and stars Jeff Daniels, who I always picture in comedic rolls like Dumb and Dumber, but he really shows his dramatic side in this new role. He plays a grumpy, rude, self-absorbed news anchor who battles his co-workers and bosses on a daily basis. He wants to keep his popularity with the public without showing who he really is; however, when asked a question at a college forum he loses it and his popularity. He answers the question honestly, from the heart and without thinking of political correctness and it gets him in trouble. I loved the speech and think we need more people to step up and speak their minds just as he did, without apology.

The show revolves around the newsroom of a major network station and how they decide what becomes the news and how it will be presented to the public. Last nights episode was about the 2010 BP oil spill off the Louisiana coast and what angle the station was going to take on that story. Having received inside information from sources that could set this story up as more than just a simple oil spill. In the end they choose a different route than all other news outlets and essentially get the scoop on the story.

The show moves at such a quick pace that at times I found myself griping the chair and my heart rate picking up a little. Sounds weird, I know, but I really got into the show. That’s what I loved about it. You feel like you’re right there with them, making decisions and feeling nervous when they asked the hard questions or are up against a deadline.

I encourage you to check out this new show. It’s brilliantly scripted, not another reality show, and has well developed characters with flaws that are human and relateable. Even the egotistical, grumpy character Will McAvoy (Daniels) is likeable.

Check out the trailer from last nights episode.
