The FARM, ‘Home Sweet Home’ – Lyrics Uncovered
It’s hard to believe that the lyrics to ‘Home Sweet Home’ — the FARM‘s debut hit — were penned just after the three members first said hello to each other. Damien Horne, Krista Marie and Nick Hoffman were set up to write along with now-producer Danny Myrick, which not only led to a great song, but also the formation of one of country music’s hottest new groups.
“Writing the first song was a cool experience,” Horne tells Taste of Country. “That part of it was the typical Nashville thing … you get writers in the room, and sometimes you don’t even know the people you’re writing with. You kind of have heard of them, and then you end up connecting. However that may have happened, we all ended up in that room together – it was actually around a pool.”
“A song called ‘Home Sweet Home’ is kind of a common theme in country music,” he continues. “You’ve probably heard that type of song before, but it was something that we definitely drew from because it was a common ground for us. It was also like a getting-to-know session. It was like, ‘Hey – state your name, where you’re from and what you like to do,’ because we had to get to know each other. We had never even been in the same room together before.”
“I can smell my mama’s cooking / And the sweet magnolia trees / Nothing like summer time on a summer night / I can hear those crickets calling me,” the FARM wrote in the ‘Home Sweet Home’ lyrics.
“Writing about ‘home’ was something that resonated for all of us,” notes Horne. “We have strong pride with where we come from. That seemed like the natural place to kind of start a song there. We developed the song as we went. It was cool.”
“I need a little time / I need a little space / I need gone a little out of this place / I wanna get back / Where I can breathe / Where I feel free / Yeah, Take me back, I’ve been away too long / Take me back to my home sweet home,” they wrote in the song’s chorus.
“One of the things that stood out to me at first was the harmonies, and just the three vocal parts and how it blended so well without even really trying,” says Horne.
“‘Home Sweet Home’ ended up actually becoming a bit of a model for the sound of the FARM because we didn’t realize it at the time, but we were experimenting in that moment,” adds Hoffman. “We were experimenting with everybody changing up and singing lead at different times. In ‘Home Sweet Home,’ for example, Damien and Krista are singing on a verse, and I kind of come in and sing lead on the chorus. That’s just the way we wrote it that day. We didn’t anticipate it staying that way, but it ended up being cool and what worked for us.”
