‘The Disaster Artist’ Trailer: James Franco Recreates a Disaster

Subscribe to KEAN 105 on

The Disaster Artist premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last night (we’ll have a full review later), and while you won’t be able to see James Franco’s ode to mercurial filmmaker Tommy Wiseau until December, you can watch this great new trailer courtesy of A24. The star-studded film (featuring pretty much every actor you expect to see in a movie with Franco and Seth Rogen) already has a lot of positive buzz, and although it probably won’t earn any Oscars (well, maybe?), its awards season release date doesn’t feel all that strange.

The new trailer for The Disaster Artist shows off the film’s softer side. It’s not just a recreation of the making of Wiseau’s iconically terrible The Room; it’s a film about following your dreams, however ill-advised they may seem, and there’s an odd sort of reverence / affection for Wiseau. One of the things that’s impressed audiences so far is how Franco & Co. approach their subject — not with disdainful mocking, but with empathy.

The Disaster Artist also stars Dave Franco, Alison Brie, Zac Efron, Bryan Cranston (as himself), Sharon Stone, Josh Hutcherson and Judd Apatow, and is described as follows:

With The Disaster Artist, James Franco transforms the tragicomic true-story of aspiring filmmaker and infamous Hollywood outsider Tommy Wiseau—an artist whose passion was as sincere as his methods were questionable—into a celebration of friendship, artistic expression, and dreams pursued against insurmountable odds. Based on Greg Sestero’s best-selling tell-all about the making of Tommy’s cult-classic disasterpiece The Room (“The Greatest Bad Movie Ever Made”), The Disaster Artist is a hilarious and welcome reminder that there is more than one way to become a legend—and no limit to what you can achieve when you have absolutely no idea what you’re doing.

The Disaster Artist hits theaters on December 1.
