The Avett Brothers recently paid homage to the late Dolores O'Riordan with a moving cover of the sweeping Cranberries ballad "Linger." The performance took place during a concert in Louisville, Ky. on Jan. 20; readers can press play above to watch the tribute.

During the Avett Brothers' cover, Seth Avett mimicked O'Riordan's lilt and phrasing throughout the song; backup harmonies provided by fiddle player Tania Elizabeth captured the haunting chorus that made "Linger" the hit that it was in the mid-1990s. With fiddle and cello parts, the band translated the orchestral background that set the Cranberries -- and "Linger" -- apart in the grunge era.

O'Riordan and Cranberries bandmate Noel Hogan co-wrote "Linger," which was released as a single in 1993. Certified gold in the United States, the song became a Top 5 hit on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart; a Top 10 hit on the Mainstream Top 40 and Hot 100 charts; and a Top 20 hit on the Adult Contemporary chart.

O'Riordan died unexpectedly in London, England, on the morning of Jan. 15; she was 46. Her death is not suspicious, according to authorities. O'Riordan was London for a recording session with Bad Wolves, a metal band. She has been buried at Caherally Cemetery in Ireland, her home country; her father is also buried there.

The Avett Brothers are currently on tour following 2017's release of Judd Apatow's documentary about the band, May It Last; the project chronicles the group's journey through putting together their latest album, True Sadness
