TxDOT Gears Up for ‘Click It or Ticket’ Campaign

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) are gearing up for their annual ‘Click It or Ticket’ campaign, which urges drivers to use their seat belt, or face fines and court costs of up to $200.

From May 18th through May 31st, law enforcement will be cracking down on drivers who choose not to use their seat belt.

TxDOT deputy executive director, John Barton, talks about seat belt safety:

“It’s heartbreaking to know lives are being lost on Texas roadways because people are still not buckling up,” said John Barton, TxDOT deputy executive director. “These motorists have friends and families who will never get over the loss of their loved one. It’s really simple. Seat belts save lives. Every single individual in a vehicle needs to be buckled up.” [via TxDOT]

As you can see in the video above, TxDOT pokes a little fun at people who drive huge trucks. But, even though they are having a little fun with the PSA, not wearing your seat belt is no laughing matter.

In 2014, over 2500 crashes were reported in Texas in which someone lost their life because they were not wearing a seat belt. Wearing a seat belt increases the chances of surviving a car wreck by 45 percent. In pickup trucks, the survival rate increases to 60 percent. So, why wouldn’t you wear a seat belt? It literally just takes seconds.

Simply put, if you don’t buckle up, you’ll definitely  have to pay up – or even worse, you could die in a wreck.
