In a White House briefing held Friday, President Obama announced the remaining American troops in Iraq will be home by the end of the year, closing a war effort there that has killed more than 4,400 US servicepeople and wounded 32,000 more since 2003. “After nine years, America’s war in Iraq will be over,” the president said.

President Obama Ends Ban on Gays in the Military
On Friday, President Obama joined Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Adm. Mike Mullen in formally signing a document certifying that military readiness would not be hurt by allowing gays in the military. The notice will now be sent to Congress. The action officially repeals the 17-year-old “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy enacted during the Clinton Administration and begins the 60-day waiting period

Wildfires are burning across our state and many of them have been right here near Abilene.  If you live in this area then you have stepped outside and smelled the burning brush, seen the haze over Abilene and your car is probably covered in a thin layer of ash. A homeless man in Austin has been arrested for starting a fire that burned 18 homes.
