A few months ago AMC's period drama 'Hell on Wheels' found itself in dire straits, as despite a season 3 renewal, showrunner Josh Shiban and co-creators/executive producers Joe and Tony Gayton were announced to depart the series. A third season of the acclaimed drama was put on hold until 'Falling Skies' vet John Wirth signed on to helm the series, putting it back on track to debut this summer. So, who's the first major new character to sign on for 'Hell on Wheels' season 3?

We've heard rumblings of several new AMC projects lately, partly to compensate for the uncertain status of 'Hell on Wheels' season 3. The series had previously been renewed for a third year, but that renewal was cast into doubt when showrunner Josh Shiban and co-creators/executive producers Joe and Tony Gayton were announced to depart the series. Now, AMC has tapped John Wirth ('Falling Skies,' 'The Cape,' 'Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles') to fill the void as executive producer/showrunner, so is 'Hell on Wheels' season 3 officially back on the rails?

Yesterday, amid all the insanity of Hurricane Sandy we learned the surprising news from AMC that transcontinental railroad drama 'Hell on Wheels' would keep rolling for a third season, in spite of its mediocre ratings and lukewarm critical reception. An official airdate has not yet been set for the western series' return, but what will be different about 'Hell on Wheels' season 3? Might cast or creative depart the series?

She may have drifted quietly along, but by golly, 'Hell On Wheels' has kept chugging along. Several weeks after fininishing out its second, mildly-rated season, AMC has announced that it will bring the Anson Mount-fronted western series back for a third season, to be aired at an unknown date. But with the murky airdate, what's changed about the number of episodes for the third season? Does 'Hell On Wheels' have less track ahead of it?
