My Black Friday Experience Was Calm and Less Frightening Than Expected

There seems to be a calmer, gentler crowd of Black Friday shoppers this year as Abilene prepares for Christmas. There were still big gatherings outside stores, waiting for the best deals in town. Just not like in previous years. Does this mean holiday spending is down? Probably not. Now that stores are starting to offer their big deals on Thanksgiving night, fewer people are waking up early.

Michael Jordan was one of the biggest names in basketball for many years, then he retired, retired and retired. He hasn't played professionally since 2003. Yes, there were many comebacks for Jordan and now his shoes have made a comeback too. The Nike Air Jordan's haven't been on the market since 1996 and now there is the Air Jordan '11 Retro Concourse and seems everyone wants them. So much so, in fact, that mayhem ensued almost like Black Friday all over again.

Black Friday is a day where everything we gave thanks for and asked God to make us a better person at, all goes out the window. There is nothing worse than listening to women call each other names curse, claw, scratch and fight over a few items that are on sale for a few hours and for a limited few people. This was not limited to just women, it's that women were the ones I witnessed doing all the a fore mentioned and more. It appears that this "black Friday deal shopping" has become a sort of full contact sport and has men and from what I mostly saw, women using fowl and threatening language. What has happened to us? Why have we allowed a few stores to lure us into this type of "Jerry Springer mentality?"

Last week I reported to you that stores like Wal-Mart, Target, Macy's & Best Buy were moving up their "Black Friday" openings to Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, to get a jump on the holiday shopping season. It just seems to get earlier and earlier every year and at some point you have to fight back. That's what the employees of Target are doing now.

It's typical for stores to open early on Black Friday, the name given to the biggest shopping day of the year, the day after Thanksgiving. But it seems it's getting earlier and earlier and this year it's even gone so far as to stores opening on Thanksgiving Day itself. Retailers are trying to make up for lost sales this year by opening earlier and staying open later to do it.
