Krista is an black and white four year old Tabby cat that was turned in by her owner. Abilene Animal Control Shelter employees tell me that Krista is a victim of domestic abuse. It seems that her owner (to save her own life) moved into the NOAH Project and then, she begged animal shelter officers to help find "really good homes" for her two pets. The family's dog was adopted Saturday. Now only Krista the cat remains, sad and alone at the animal shelter looking for a safer environment to call home.

Duke, the Border Collie Mix, Has Been Adopted – KEAN Critters [UPDATED]

Duke, the sweet, petite 2 year old Border Collie mix, got lucky. Since Duke was found roaming the street in front of the Abilene Animal Shelter, he was considered a stray. Strays are usually scheduled to be put to death after a customary waiting period. That time for Duke had run out. Luckily, a Border Collie rescue group from Conroe, Texas stepped forward and agreed to take Duke in at a foster home. Duke will live with Deborah, a Border Collie Rescue Volunteer, until a permanent home is found for Duke.

This is Ginger, the most lovable 5 month old Boxer Lab mix that is looking for love. She was found roaming the streets of Abilene around the 3200 block of North First Street when she was picked up by the Abilene Animal Shelter. Because Ginger is a stray, she will need to find a home right away before her time runs out this weekend. I spent some time with Ginger and discovered she loves to sit in your lap and just chill out, which is a good thing that she only weighs 25 pounds. She is very well behaved for a 5 month old.

This is Bella, a yellow-lab mix that should have been named 'Lucky, because she's had a rough go at life. She is an owner turn in, only because her previous owner didn't know how to train her to keep from jumping up on them whenever they were outside with her. That is the only reason Bella was surrendered to the Abilene Animal Shelter, where her time has run out. This is her last chance as you'll see by the fact that she is also discounted to only $20. The first time the breed was recognized as a separate breed in the United States was in early 1945. Amazingly the Abilene Animal Shelter has one of these rare breed dogs, and he needs a ride to the Dallas Ft. Worth area Coonhound Rescue group.

It's an awesome day for Hercules the German Shepherd/Great Pyrenees mix. He went home with Abilene's best and most well known weatherman, Pete Beretta. I received a phone call Monday evening from a very excited Pete Beretta, who began the conversation by saying "Hercules came home with me, Jack! This big guy is so beautiful, you ought to see him after I gave him a bath." Beretta went on to say "you weren't kidding when you said this is the sweetest dog,Hercules is awesome brother!"

Queen the sweet little Border Collie was adopted by what Aaron Vannoy Executive Director for the Abilene Animal Control Shelter says is a "Border Collie rescue group." "The dog 'Queenie' that you came and did as the KEAN Critter has found a rescue group to take him. This is great news and another success. Amy B. of Abilene gave Curtis a loving home, so a big special thanks goes to Miss Amy for caring enough to give a poor defenseless little critter a second chance at life. She was finally adopted this past Saturday when the Abilene Animal Shelter and other rescue organizations held an 'emergency pet rescue' on the busiest shopping weekend of the year. I was overcome with joy when Animal Services Manager Aaron Vannoy informed me of Nina's good fortune. This young (two and a half year old) wire-hair terrier mix is very smart, obviously cute and she is extremely lovable (as you can see in the photos). From the minute I saw Sugar, I knew she was someones special friend. She looked right at me, as if she was trying to say, "Hey there, you look like you could use a friend and a hug." This is Lucy, a lab golden retriever mix that should have been named 'Lucky, because she's had a rough life and she's lucky she's made it this long. First off her left front leg was broken, and it healed wrong. The vet says "just leave it alone, it doesn't seem to hurt her she'll be just fine". Then some how her tail got chopped off and it looks as if she has been on her own for a long time. All that said, Lucy is a very sweet and extremely lovable pet. She really needs a animal lover to take her in, because in my opinion she's due to be a winner.

Before I introduce our next KEAN Critter, with a heavy heart, I hate to report that last week's pair of "Lovable Labs" did not get adopted in time. I was informed by the staff at the shelter that "no one ever adopts or wants the older animals". That is a shame. They were just so beautiful and well behaved. It's so sad.

Can you help save Sandy and Runt the two lovable labs?

This is the tail of two labs, who are well trained, Sandy is are 11 years old while Runt is only 10 years old, both are fixed, housebroken and they make quite the pair. Both took to the leash and were ready for whatever came their way. Sandy the 65 pound female and Runt the 60 pound male didn't bark or tug on the leash and when big Larry (who works at the Animal Shelter) threw them two doggie biscuits, the fun was on. Sandy the taller of the two caught one in mid air, while Runt was still wondering what all Sandy was eating. They are owner turn ins because their previous masters are moving and "can not take the dogs with them."

Love is in the air, because Toby's original owners showed up at the pound, holding hands and wanting their "little baby back." At first they were afraid that Toby might have been put down, since he was there so long. I think, 'Lucky' is what I would change his name to. Mom and dad are back together again and life is good for a Chihuahua/Terrier mix they named Toby. Thank you to all that shared this blog and helped to get Toby a new home.

Guess who finally went home after getting a temporary 'stay of execution'? Hank the Handsome Lab mix may be wagging his tail, but I can't seem to quit smiling as I'm overcome by tears of joy. I had been praying that Hank would be spared. "The bigger dogs are harder to adopt," so I'm told by Mr. Vannoy the Director of the animal shelter, thus the reason why I worried so much about the 85 pound lab named Hank. Good news came early this morning, Nipsey the three year old orange tabby was adopted. Abilene Animal Control Shelter officer Frost said "Nipsey went to his new home late Friday just before the shelter closed." Thank you to the anonymous family that adopted him, and thanks to everyone that shared the blog and helped spread the word, about a lovable overweight cat named Nipsey. This one went down to the wire, Cowboy the Golden/Pyrenees mix was adopted Saturday. Aaron Vannoy the Director for Abilene Animal Control Shelter said, "Cowboy was adopted by Danielle Molina on Saturday afternoon just before we closed. She already had a great Pyrenees retriever named Charlie. Now Charlie has a buddy named Cowboy." Thanks to everyone that shared the blog and helped spread the word on Cowboy.
