Some weeks ago we heard our first confirmation and casting of Starz's upcoming Ron Moore-helmed adaptation of 'Outlander,' casting Sam Heughan in the series lead role that brings Dianna Gabaldon's best-selling novels to life. Now, the Starz production has doubled-down on a dose of 'Game of Thrones,' adding HBO star Tobias Menzies in a dual role for the upcoming production.

Via The Hollywood Reporter, Menzies will pull double duty as both characters Frank Randall and Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall. Frank is Claire's 20th century husband, a professional historian with a vested interest in the 18th century and his own genealogy. He and Claire are reunited in 1945 after having been separated by the war, rekindling their relationship before Claire disappears. The role of Jonathan, Frank's dark and violent 18th century ancestor, sees Menzies as a captain in the English Army posted into Scotland during the rebellion.

‘Outlander’'s first season will unfold over 16 episodes, telling the story of married World War II combat nurse Claire, who accidentally steps back in time to the year 1743 where she is “immediately thrown into an unknown world of adventure that sends her on the run and threatens her life.” Claire is forced to marry a chivalrous and romantic young Scottish warrior named Jamie, igniting a passionate affair that tears Claire’s heart between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

Joining Moore are Toni Graphia, Matt Roberts, Ira Behr and Anne Kenney as fellow writers on the project, which likely begins shooting this October in Scotland. For its part, the ‘Outlander’ series of books have sold over 20 million copies, with an eighth novel in the series due out later this year.

Menzies may have survived 'Game of Thrones' "Red Wedding," but could that mean we see Edmure Tully in a reduced role going forward? Tell us if you'll watch Starz's adaptation of 'Outlander' in the comments!
