Has ‘Star Trek 3′ Found Its Director in Rupert Wyatt?

Yesterday we heard the rumor that John M. Chu, director of ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ was one of the names being considered for the vacated ‘Star Trek 3‘ captain’s chair. That rumor was quickly shot down, but now a new name has risen to the forefront of the conversation: ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes‘ helmer Rupert Wyatt. But how close is this to actually happening?

The rumor (and we’ll keep it at that until official confirmation or denial surfaces) comes from two sources: Cinematallica, which first reported the news, and Collider, which backed up the claim. The former said it’s virtually a lock that Wyatt will direct ‘Star Trek 3,’ and while the latter doesn’t go that far, the site has apparently been hearing Wyatt’s name bandied about as well.

Paramount is moving with determination on ‘Star Trek 3,’ having locked up screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci to pen the sequel. J.J. Abrams is producing, but obviously won’t be able to direct, thanks to a little something called ‘Star Wars: Episode 7.’ Who sits in the director’s chair will come under great scrutiny, hence finding the right person won’t be a matter taken lightly by the studio.

Much of the praise given to ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ was rightly laid at Wyatt’s feet; the man was able to turn the summer blockbuster into an exciting and dramatic film with emotional resonance. Since then, Wyatt has been attached to a handful of projects, but none have lifted off the ground. He was briefly attached to the ‘Apes’ sequel, ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,’ but couldn’t agree with the studio on the schedule, and also flirted with ‘The Equalizer’ before walking away. Let’s see if ‘Star Trek 3′ ends up being his anticipated encore.
