Momentum is growing for the long in development Spy Hunter film, as Deadline reports that unknown writer Carter Blanchard will pen the screenplay. Although he has no feature films under his best, Blanchard did sell his spec script Glimmer to DreamWorks.

Based on the popular Midway video game, Spy Hunter had been a pet project for Dwayne Johnson, but the action star has since left it. The film is being directed by Ruben Fleischer, a filmmaker who wowed Hollywood with his surprise hit Zombieland. His last two films, 30 Minutes or Less and Gangster Squad, did not light the cinematic world on fire, as both were box office disappointments.

Don't expect Spy Hunter to linger in development hell for much longer, as Warner Bros., the studio behind Gangster Squad, is known for fast tracking projects with directors they trust (Guy Ritchie, Christopher Nolan, Zack Snyder, to name a few). Is Ruben Fleischer climbing towards the top of the studio's directing food chain? If Mr. Fleischer, and not Dwayne Johnson, resurrects Spy Hunter from the dead, that would be a huge feat indeed.
