Jacob Tremblay has had it with your “aww”s and dumb baby noises. He will not conform to society’s expectations of what an adorable child actor should be. He will not be boxed in by your precious stereotypes. The star of Room is determined to shatter his Cute Kid persona before the adhesive on that label even has a chance to dry, as evidenced by the trailer for Shut In (the anti-Room, if you will), Tremblay’s latest attempt at defying twee norms.

USA Today debuted the first trailer for Shut In, in which Naomi Watts (previously terrorized by creepy young folks in The Ring, Funny Games and a couple of those Divergent movies) plays a child psychologist still reeling from the tragic accident that claimed her husband’s life and rendered her teenage son comatose. In an effort to, I dunno, regain some sense of normalcy or mix things up a bit, she decides to foster a deaf child (Tremblay), and that’s when things get a bit spooky.

And no, that’s not young Leonardo DiCaprio from What’s Eating Gilbert Grape as Watts’ son — it’s Charlie Heaton from Stranger Things. Oliver Platt plays the part of “wise professor-type who delivers exposition via Skype,” a role previously played by Vincent D’Onofrio in Sinister.

Shut In looks intriguing enough (there’s definitely some Babadook-ness going on here), and with all that talk of Watts’ isolation and her thin grasp on reality, there’s bound to be some big psychological twist in the third act. Or maybe the twist is that there’s no twist at all. It’s also not the only horror thriller starring Jacob Tremblay that’s suffered a few release changes — he also appears in Before I Wake, the long-delayed film from the director of Oculus.

Shut In was directed by Farren Blackburn (Daredevil, Luther) from Christina Hodson’s screenplay, which appeared on the 2012 Blacklist:

A child psychologist living an isolated life in rural New England is struggling to put her life back together after the loss of her husband. She’s a strong woman whose courage is put to the test when she’s caught in a deadly storm, trapped in her home, and cut off from the world around her.

Shut In hits theaters on November 11.
