While Scotty McCreery may have shot into stardom practically overnight on ‘American Idol,’ the 18-year-old Garner, N.C. native isn’t gaining fame at the cost of an average teenage life. In fact, the ‘Water Tower Town’ singer continues to impress with his level-headed decisions. After revealing a couple weeks ago that he’ll be attending North Carolina State University in the fall, McCreery announced his intended major this week.

“For me right now I’m looking at marketing,” the young star told Country Vibe. “Marketing or communications, something that could help me out with what I’m doing, something could help me with this industry but not necessarily be music because I’m learning about music every day and I’m in music class all the time as an 18-year-old.”

Impressive logic, right? We’re not entirely surprised, though, since McCreery was quick to rejoin his high school baseball team this year and pitch a few games, even though he had just been on tour with Brad Paisley and the Band Perry. Just last week, he told CMT that he plans to room with four of his longtime friends while away at school so as not to get stuck with random roommates. The ACM New Artist of the Year says it’s about balance.

“I’m not ever gonna be that guy that’s out there working 365 days a year,” he explains. “I care about my family and my home life and this all happened to me so quick I think it’s important for me to get in slowly and work my way in. And so right now we have that balance. It’s working good in high school, and college will be a whole other monster.”
