Russell Crowe Chooses ‘The Water Diviner’ for Directorial Debut

Russell Crowe Man of Steel
Warner Bros.

Actor Russell Crowe is celebrating the box office success of ‘Man of Steel‘ with the announcement that he’s chosen a project for his directorial debut — a period drama titled ‘The Water Diviner.’

Deadline reports that Crowe is plotting to make his debut behind the camera with ‘The Water Diviner,’ which may sound an awful lot like a Young Adult book adaptation, but is anything but. Based on a script by Andrew Knight and Andrew Anastasios (no, not the Andrew Andrew DJ duo from ‘Girls‘), the story follows an Australian man who in 1919 sets out to Turkey to find his two sons who have gone missing after the battle in Gallipoli during World War I. Australia’s Gallipoli campaign is considered the birth of Australia’s national consciousness, and was also the inspiration for Peter Weir’s 1981 film ‘Gallipoli.’

Crowe will shoot the film in both his native home of Australia and Turkey sometime later this year. He will also star in the film, presumably as the Australian father, which sounds like the kind of role that will give us Russell Crowe with a beard — arguably the best kind of Russell Crowe.

The actor can be seen in theaters right now in Zack Snyder‘s ‘Man of Steel,’ which broke box office opening records with its $116 million weekend opening. It’s not a bad time to be Russell Crowe, is what we’re saying.
