Ron Perlman Says ‘Hellboy 3′ Must Happen
‘Hellboy‘ and ‘Hellboy II: The Golden Army’ were only modest successes by the standards of superhero movies, grossing $99 million and and $160 million respectively, so the demand for a ‘Hellboy 3‘ doesn’t seem particularly high. However, according to Hellboy himself, Ron Perlman, a third film needs to happen.
Despite the fact that they weren’t huge hits, both of the ‘Hellboy’ films are pretty terrific and feature director Guillermo del Toro at his wackiest and most playful. Although his slate is currently full of seemingly dozens of projects, surely he could carve out some time to cap off Hellboy’s story. After all, according to Perlman (via IGN), he already knows exactly what a third film would look like:
We both walked away from Hellboy 2 agreeing that there would never be another one. But, with the passage of time, it became clear to me that he really always designed it as a trilogy. He has a very well-articulated idea of what the resolve would look like and it’s amazingly theatrical and is epic in scope and would make for amazing cinema, with or without the first two movies.
However, del Toro’s imagination is infamously bigger than his capacity for actually getting movies made, so there’s always a chance that ‘Hellboy 3′ will join the countless ideas that never leave his brain. That’s not going to stop Perlman though, who keeps pestering the filmmaker about finishing the trilogy:
But there are so many questions posed in the first two films that absolutely need to be answered. I said, ‘You owe it to the world to finish this trilogy.’ I’ve been giving him Jewish guilt.
You can see Perlman in del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim‘ this summer, a project that, hopefully, will give the director enough clout to make whatever he wants…maybe even ‘Hellboy 3.’
