Report: Sony to Debut Broadband TV Service at CES

Sony Video Unlimited

Sony is reportedly pulling out all the stops in an effort to maintain its ground in the battle for living room domination with Microsoft and Nintendo, and could be readying its own broadband streaming television service for 2013.

As Variety reported, Sony is apparently in licensing negotiations with a few content providers to use their channels in a new service that could make its way to U.S. customers as early as this year. Little is known about this prospective service, but it is believed to include, “a package of channels akin to what pay-TV distributors traditionally provide.”

Unlike Microsoft, which currently has deals with providers like Comcast and Verizon to show limited programming provide through the Xbox 360, Sony’s deal would make them competitors of Comcast and Verizon, as well as other providers like Dish. Intel is also looking to debut a new broadband media service at CES, though just as little is known about that service at the moment.

CES 2013 is set to kick off on Monday, so we may not have to wait long to see just what Sony has in store for the future of streaming media.

What do you think of Sony’s possible plans? Would you drop cable in favor of limited selection potentially provided through your PlayStation 3?
