Relay for Life of Taylor County

2012 Relay for Life
Shay Hill

Relay for Life is coming up Friday, April 24th. This is an incredible annual event that I have been a part of for the last few years. I will, again, be making the ‘survivor‘ lap this year; thankfully for the third time. Here are details on how to form a team and come walk with us to raise money for The American Cancer Society. Relay for Life is an emotional evening for all involved. Whether you are a survivor, supporter, or just want to be a part of a great cause you will be affected by this walk.

The evening starts out with the survivor lap and then continues with team members walking laps throughout the night and ends the next morning. I had a cousin that passed away a few years ago from colon cancer and I remember how she talked about the Relay for Life event in her area. She loved it and made so many friends. So when I was diagnosed I joined the Abilene event and found a great kinship and positive vibe from folks who know what your going through or have been through. It’s a great way to celebrate, remember and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow cancer survivors and caregivers.

I think my favorite part of the night is the Luminaria Ceremony. Tea light candles are placed inside of personalized bags to symbolize shining a light on the fight against cancer. It’s very moving, as everyone in the stadium becomes silent and walks a lap and finds the bag of their loved one. The bags can be purchased and personalized in celebration of or in memory of a loved one.

I encourage you to come out and experience the most moving walk you will ever be a part of, whether you have been touched by cancer in some way or not.
