Ratchet and Clank Animated Feature Coming in 2015

Ratchet and Clank Movie

After more than a decade of starring in their own video game franchise, Ratchet and Clank are headed to the big screen for an original animated feature.

Unlike most video game movie adaptations, the creative team behind Ratchet and Clank won’t have to work very hard to transition the characters and the universe to the big screen. Blockade Entertainment and Rainmaker Entertainment have already made the right move in bringing T.J. Fixman, writer of all the Ratchet and Clank games, on board for the script.

According to Variety, the film will serve as an origin story, as the production companies involved are making this movie for more than just the fans that have stuck with Insomniac’s series since the beginning. “You don’t want to alienate the core people that made this franchise so successful, but at the end of the day, the game itself is irrelevant,” said Rainmaker president Michael Hefferon. “It’s all about what you’re seeing on that screen. It’s about going to see a fantastic animated movie.”

Interestingly enough, Blockade Entertainment is also currently producing an adaptation of another Sony-exclusive franchise, Heavenly Sword. Little else is know about that project at the moment, but this early title for the PlayStation 3 did have a compelling fantasy adventure story that could translate well to a feature-length adaptation. Though there was no date given, Heavenly Sword is expected to be a direct-to-video release.

Ratchet and Clank isn’t set to hit theaters until 2015, but you can check out the first teaser trailer for the feature below.
