Randy Travis Pleads Guilty and Avoids Jail
Randy Travis pleaded guilty yesterday to ‘driving while intoxicated’ (DWI) in Sherman, Texas and will not have to spend anytime behind bars, so long as he follows the courts orders. While at first it appears that yet another celebrity is “getting away with it” and without real punishment. Nothing could be further from the truth, in fact Travis was handed a bit stiffer sentence than the average Joe would get in a similar situation. Here’s how the the country crooner will be spending the next two years.
The 53 year old Randy Travis was placed on probation for the next two years, he’ll have to pay a $2,000 fine, 180 day suspended jail sentence, 100 hours of community service, ‘interlock-ignitions’ installed on all his vehicles and a mandatory minimum 30 day stay at an alcohol treatment facility.
‘On the Other Hand,’ Travis could have really been hit hard, because this wasn’t ‘just a DWI case.’ Grayson County prosecutor Joe Brown said, while the punishment may seem considerably more than a typical DWI case, in our county. Travis was actually facing ‘retaliation charges’ because of his behavior and threats he made towards the arresting officers. Since Travis agreed to the plea-agreement, Brown agreed to drop the retaliation charges.
The Grayson County District Attorney says an average DWI case would be given a fine and an 18 month probation period on a first offense. If the for any reason Travis fails to complete any of the per-arranged conditions to his sentence, he will face real jail time and will have go before the judge again.
