The sands of time have gone south for the Prince of Persia, as the franchise has been temporarily shelved. The move, however, does not signal an end to the Jordan Mechner created hero.

In an interview with IGN, Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yanis Mallat said fans should not worry about the franchise's hiatus. "Prince of Persia is part of Ubisoft's portfolio," said Mallat. "As a matter of fact, we sometimes iterate on franchises and sometimes we give them time to breathe and time to grow, or time to rest. Prince of Persia is as important as any other franchise for Ubisoft. As soon as we have something to show, we will."

The last installment of the franchise, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands was released in 2010. The movie Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was also released that year and performed below expectations. Although a screenshot that from a supposed new Prince of Persia game surfaced last year, Ubisoft had no comment on the image.
