It's been something of an up and down week for USA, which has offered renewals and scheduling for its flagship series 'Burn Notice,' Suits,' 'White Collar' and even 'Necessary Roughness,' while cancelling 'Common Law' and sophomore courtroom drama 'Fairly Legal.' The latest ax to fall on the network is Sigourney Weaver's highly-acclaimed but poorly-rated Washington D.C. drama 'Political Animals,' though the news isn't as surprising as you might expect. What's the network saying about the cancellation?

We won't be seeing any more 'Political Animals' on USA, though for the most part, viewers shouldn't have expected to. The series had been billed from the beginning as a "limited series event," though series creator Greg Berlanti ('Arrow') had been quoted as saying that the writers had future Barrish family stories in mind should the series prove a ratings success. Still, given the series' bomb at 3.2 million viewers overall, USA decided to pass on any additional orders.

“We are proud of 'Political Animals,' our miniseries that attracted critical acclaim and impacted the cultural conversation this summer,” said the network. “It was a pleasure to work with Greg Berlanti and Laurence Mark and a powerful cast led by Sigourney Weaver. We look forward to collaborating again with these immensely talented creatives.”

Prior to the cancellation, 'Political Animals’ chronicled a former first family weakened by political ambition, lust and greed, centered on Elaine Barrish (Weaver), divorced former First Lady and newly appointed Secretary of State. Having lost her own presidential nomination, Barrish relied on her son Doug (James Wolk), an ambitious politico who serves as her chief of staff, while tormented by his twin brother’s addiction struggles. All the while, Barrish’s deposed ex-husband (Ciaran Hinds) maintains affection for her and the office he once held, while the former First Lady faced the increasing crises of the department.

What say you? Are you sad to see the end of 'Political Animals'? Could the series have gone on for an additional season?
