‘Pacific Rim 2′ Plot Makes Guillermo del Toro Say, “F— Yeah!”

Pacific Rim 2 Plot
Warner Bros.

“F— yeah!” That was Guillermo del Toro‘s response when Legendary Entertainment CEO Thomas Tull asked him if he could come up with another great idea for ‘Pacific Rim 2.’ The first one hasn’t even hit theaters yet (is set for a July 12 release) but the decision was made a while back to start work early on a follow-up, and now the first kernels of a story have dropped from del Toro himself.

The director admits that all you really needed for ‘Pacific Rim‘ was a “wrestling match” of epic proportions — in this case, between the invading Kaiju monsters that arise from a dimensional crack in the Pacific Ocean and the giant Jaeger robots defending humanity. But for ‘Pacific Rim 2,’ del Toro and writer Travis Breachman will delve deeper into the alien mythos behind these monsters.

“They’re a race of blind consumers grabbing planets, consuming them, and moving to the next,” says del Toro (via EW). “The idea [with the sequel] is to explore a little bit of that. I won’t spoil it, but I don’t think we’ll repeat a single beat from the first movie.”

It wasn’t clear whether or not del Toro would return to direct ‘Pacific Rim 2,’ and even now it’s up in the air. He’s got a ton of upcoming projects in the works, including his haunted house movie ‘Crimson Peak,’ a still “in the works” ‘Justice League Dark‘ adaptation and FX’s new TV series ‘The Strain,’ based on his original vampire novels of the same name. Regardless if he finds the time to direct on top of writing the ‘Pacific Rim 2′ screenplay, “it’ll take [him] at least two years to develop” the script. So don’t hold your breath!
