Notre Dame’s faint BCS bowl hopes took a big hit this week when it was determined that starting running back Jonas Gray will miss the rest of the season after suffering a torn MCL. Gray was the Fighting Irish’s top-scoring threat, scoring in eight straight games, the longest such streak by a Fighting Irish running back since 1998.

Notre Dame was 4-0 since Gray was inserted in the starting lineup last month. He finishes the season with 114 carries for 791 yards and 12 touchdowns. Along with fellow running back Cierre Wood, who began the season as the starter, Gray had given the Irish a potent running attack down the stretch. In the last four games, the two combined for 704 yards and 10 touchdowns. For the season, the two have scored 21 of Notre Dame’s 24 rushing touchdowns, the most rushing scores by a Fighting Irish team since 2000.

Notre Dame plays at #4 Stanford this weekend.
