As of this week, the Nintendo 3DS has exceeded the PlayStation 3 in lifetime sales in Japan.

According to VGA247, a report from Media Create says that 8,799,378 3DS units have sold since the handheld's launch in early 2011. Sony was reported to have moved 8,716,260 PlayStation 3 units since the console's launch in 2006. This means that the 3DS has sold more in almost two years than the PS3 has in its six years of being in the market.

Media Create's stats for the last week of sales is shown below, with the lifetime sales for each console in the brackets.
