Imagine being on a transcontinental flight and getting ready to tuck into a turkey sandwich only to find a sewing needle. That’s quite the unwanted condiment.

Unfortunately, it was a reality for some unlucky passengers.

Officials at Delta Air Lines are currently scratching their heads over how this scenario happened, as sewing needles were found in six sandwiches across four flights from Amsterdam to the US. According to a Delta spokesperson, a passenger en route to Minneapolis was injured, but not enough to seek medical attention. The other needles were discovered on sandwiches on two flights to Atlanta and one to Seattle.

The airline’s official statement on the matter reads:

Delta is taking this matter extremely seriously and is cooperating with local and federal authorities who are investigating the incident. Delta has taken immediate action with our in-flight caterer at Amsterdam to ensure the safety and quality of the food we provide onboard our aircraft,”

The sandwiches were prepared for business class customers by the Amsterdam location of Gate Gourmet, a catering company. After the needles were found, the passengers received replacement meals of pizza.

Gate Gourmet claims that these incidents appear to be isolated, as there have been no reports of similar occurrences. The company’s statement is as follows: “We take this matter very seriously, and we have launched our own full-scale investigation.” Heightened safety procedures are in place to prevent anyrepeats.

The FBI is now involved, having opened a criminal investigation in the situation. Delta has reacted by employing more security measures for its food prep and is using more pre-packaged foods while the matter remains under review.
