NBC Orders More ‘Up All Night,’ With a Three-Sided Twist!

NBC Up All Night Three Camera

All too often we see struggling TV series limp on with additional episode orders or merely additional script orders, but they’re usually a temporary stopgap. NBC’s ‘Up All Night‘ has never found a particularly strong foothold within the network’s lineup, even after the re-vamp of the current premise and a light ratings uptick. Regardless, good news has arrived for the Christina Applegate/Will Arnett-fronted comedy, but with an unusual twist. ‘Up All Night’ will return for more episodes, but what will be drastically different about the series?

Mixed news for fans of NBC’s ‘Up All Night,’ as the series will indeed return for more episodes beyond its current order, though not as you think. Five more episodes have been ordered to film after a three-month hiatus, but the series will jump from a single-camera effort to a three-camera sitcom, complete with live studio audience. The move is quite rare, but one producers hope will help the audience connect more with the humor.

“This was an idea we and [executive producer Lorne Michaels] came to in order to infuse the show with more energy,” said NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt. “We know what the multi-camera audience does for the live episodes of ‘30 Rock,’ plus after seeing both ['Up All Night' co-stars] Maya [Rudolph] and Christina [Applegate] do ‘SNL‘ within the past few months, we knew we had the kind of performers — Will Arnett included — who love the reaction from a live audience. We think we can make a seamless tradition to the new format.  Also, we’re committed to the multi-camera form and this will give us another show to consider for next season in this new format.”

In its new iteration, ‘Up All Night’ is expected to air the first of its new episodes in the spring. Do you think the change in format will work any wonders for the show’s ratings?
