ABC Calls for More Episodes of ‘Nashville,’ ‘Malibu Country’

There’s good news for country music fans who’ve been following their favorite music on television, as two country music-themed fall shows have been tapped for additional episodes. ABC has ordered a full season of the hour-long drama ‘Nashville,’ and the network brass have called for three additional episodes of Reba McEntire’s half-hour comedy ‘Malibu Country.’

According to the Hollywood Reporter, ‘Nashville’ — which stars Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere as country music rivals, set against the backdrop of the changing Nashville music scene — has failed to meet industry projections after it received universal critical acclaim prior to its Oct. 10 premiere, but is still firmly holding onto 6 million viewers every week. The show receives an additional revenue boost from online sales of music from each episode, which helps it remain attractive to the network as it finds its permanent audience.

‘Malibu Country’ debuted surprisingly well but dipped significantly in its second episode. The show follows the comic adventures of a former country star who moves to Malibu after her husband is caught up in a very public infidelity scandal. ABC’s limited three-episode order is likely an experiment to see if the show can maintain a consistent audience before making a decision whether to order a whole season of the rookie comedy, or cancel it.

‘Nashville’ airs on ABC on Wednesday nights at 10 PM ET. ‘Malibu Country’ airs on Friday nights at 8:30 PM ET, also on ABC.
