Jimmy Johnson’s patience paid off in a big way as the 5 time Sprint Cup Champion won the Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series took the weekend off as far as points were concerned, but the racing went on with even more intensity. That’s because there was a million dollars up for grabs in the no points and all cash All Star race.

Johnson beat Brad Keselowski by less than a second to take the All Star race for the third time, tying him with the late Dale Earnhardt and his current Hendrick Motorsports teammate, Jeff Gordon.

The race itself had a total of 4 segments with a preliminary race to determine 3 extra drivers to add to the 20 car field.  Dale Earnhardt Jr and A.J. Allmendinger raced their way into the all star race while Bobby Labonte was voted in by the fans.

The first segment was won by Johnson who had the opportunity to sit back and watch the others race while he stayed out of trouble till the last segment.  Matt Kenseth, Brad Keselowski and Dale Earnhardt Jr. won the next 3 segments to set up the shootout.  But, Jimmy Johnson’s #48 machine was too much for everybody else as the 5 time NASCAR champ took the win and the million dollar payout.
