If the overly obsessive mothers on the TLC show "Toddlers In Tiaras" make you wonder what is wrong with some parents, here's a story out of a small town north of Austin that takes the stage mother obsession to a whole new level.

Tammy Day, mother of Harker Heights High School senior Brandy Day, made national headlines when she went to extreme lengths to have her daughter elected Prom Queen. Day spent $1,000 on a billboard that simply states "Vote Brandy Day Prom Queen", with a head shot of her smiling daughter filling the right side of the sign. Mom also bought newspaper ads and printed fliers.

I know firsthand that it can be easy to get caught up in our kids' activities. I live vicariously through little league baseball, wishing I could go back and have one more at-bat. But I, like most parents, know when to keep my distance and cheer for my kid along with the rest of the normal, well-adjusted moms and dads in the bleachers.

Tammy Day takes it a step or three too far. In looking at the abcnews.com video, all I can think is that she only did all of this to get on television. Mom needs people to watch her, so she's using her daughter to solicit attention. I can't imagine the prom, which Momma Day admits "only happens once in your child's life", is going to be a positive memory for Brandy. By the way, she wasn't voted prom queen.

Brandy is planning to go to nearby Baylor University in the fall, where I certainly hope mom will keep her distance, and her roommates don't hear about her prom experience. I hope you join me in wishing her the best of luck in whatever she decides to do.

Have you ever seen a parent do something outrageous for their child?
