Medina River – Hidden Gems of Texas

San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department

Everyone heads to the Guadalupe, Comal or Frio to float or tube the river. However, those rivers get really crowded and congested. In looking for a place for my family to visit, I ran across the Medina River. It looks beautiful and is much less crowded but just as much fun.

The Medina is in the San Antonio area, and feeds into the San Antonio River. It is covered in huge Cypress, Live Oaks and Cedar trees.

The river is great for kayaking and paddling or just a lazy day of floating. The river is graded as easy to moderate, due to some sharp curves and turns along the trail. There are also some great parks and lodging along the way.Pricing, of course, will depend on your choice of amenities. You can stay at the public parks, or upgrade to hotels or lodges/resorts along the way.

Lots of wildlife can be seen from the river or hiking trails that exist along the river. This is a great place for a quick family getaway or a quite weekend for two. It’s what you make of it. I will add that, since Texas is in a severe drought, like many lakes and rivers in Texas the Medina is low in some places so check levels and activities before heading out.

Here are a few places to check out in when heading to the Medina River:

Southwest Paddler

Medina River Natural Area

San Antonio Parks and Recreation

Medina River Ranch Resort

Bandera Cowboy Capital
