If you’ve taken a history class, you know about Watergate, and you know it was “Deep Throat,” the FBI insider who brought the scandal down with secret phone calls to The Washington Post. But it wasn’t until 2005 that the public learned of Deep Throat’s true identity: he was Mark Felt, a special agent and the FBI’s Associate Director from 1972-73. In the new film Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House, Felt is played by the suitably deep-voiced Liam Neeson.

During the Watergate scandal, Felt contacted Post writers Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein and relayed them information about the FBI’s investigation. The two reporters covered the scandal for two years, and it eventually ended up with the resignation of Richard Nixon and most of his White House staff, who were all implicated in various legal violations. All thanks to Mark Felt and his particular set of skills.

Here’s the movie’s official synopsis:

Mark Felt – The Man Who Brought Down the White House centers on “Deep Throat”, the pseudonym given to the notorious whistleblower for one of the greatest scandals of all time, Watergate. The true identity of the secret informant remained a mystery and source of much public curiosity and speculation for more than 30 years. That is until, in 2005, special agent Mark Felt shockingly revealed himself as the tipster. This unbelievable true story chronicles the personal and professional life of the brilliant and uncompromising Felt, who risked and ultimately sacrificed everything – his family, his career, his freedom – in the name of justice.

Mark Felt, also starring Diane LaneTony Goldwyn, Josh Lucas, Michael C. Hall, Maika Monroe, Kate Walsh, and Tom Sizemore, has its world premiere at TIFF before opening in theaters September 29.
