Maddie Poppe put her own spin on a Carrie Underwood and Randy Travis classic on Sunday night's (May 13) episode of American Idol.

Underwood returned to the singing competition’s stage to not only mentor the talented contestants, but also to meet some of her favorites, including Poppe.

“Your voice is even more hypnotic in person,” Underwood told Poppe during their mentoring session, which was filmed earlier this week at Nashville’s Bluebird Cafe. “Just do it and stay true to yourself.”

And while Poppe seemed to battle against her own demons of self-doubt before she sang, she delivered a performance that left judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie and Katy Perry gushing over her. “You never need to worry about your singing because you tell your story,” said Bryan after the performance.

“Don’t overthink, my dear,” Richie added. “You have it.”

Poppe squared off against Gabby Barrett, Cade Foehner, Caleb Lee Hutchinson and Michael J. Woodard to determine who would make the Top 3. After delivering her second performance, a sweet version of "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys, she won her way to the next round with her performance.

Of course, the other thing that made the May 13 episode of American Idol special was in fact the presence of Underwood herself, who also performed her current single “Cry Pretty” during the live show. Fans will recall that Underwood, now a seven-time Grammy winner, launcher her career by winning the fourth season of American Idol.
