Country veteran Kevin Sharp died on Saturday night. The 43-year-old was best known for hits like ‘Nobody Knows’ and ‘If You Love Somebody,’ as well as being a passionate spokesman for the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

According to his website, Sharp’s death was due to ongoing complications from previous stomach surgeries, as well as digestive issues. Prior to become a country star in the mid-90s, Sharp battled and overcame Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of cancer. The Redding, Calif. native was granted a wish from Make-a-Wish, which he used to meet producer David Foster (Chicago).

Later he realized they only grant Make-a-Wish wishes to people they think may die. Months after meeting Foster however he was told he’d beaten the cancer. The story was chronicled in his book ‘Tragedy’s Gift,’ released in 2004.

Sharp’s meeting with Foster led to his break, as the producer helped him land his first record contract. In 1995 ‘Nobody Knows’ was released, becoming a multi-week No. 1 hit. Two follow-ups from his debut album also reached the Top 5, but subsequent recordings did not do as well. After two albums on Asylum, he released ‘Make a Wish’ on Cupit Records in 2005. This would be his final recording.

ABC reports that Sharp’s stomach issues were a side effect from the aggressive cancer treatment he underwent as a teen. His sister Mary confirms the death, adding that he was at his mother’s home in Fair Oaks, Calif. at the time following a lengthy stay in the hospital.

To the very end he was an advocate for sick children, telling his story at concerts in hopes of inspiring others. Sharp leaves behind five brothers, two sisters and his mother.
