Country and bluegrass singer Kathy Mattea has released a poignant new single, "St. Teresa," off of her upcoming album, Pretty Bird. Originally performed by Joan Osborne, the song, Mattea says, took on new meaning for her when she re-listened to the track while compiling songs for her new album.

"I had heard this song before, but I stumbled on it again when I was making this record," the singer explains. "It just struck me, in light of the opioid crisis back in Appalachia. It gave me a vehicle to channel some of the angst and anguish I've felt as I've read about it, and heard stories from various family members that hit close to home."

Originally hailing from West Virginia -- one of the states hit hardest by the opioid epidemic that has devastated the Appalachian region and beyond -- Mattea has a first-hand perspective on the ravages the crisis has wreaked. Her take on the song is meditative and weighty, an expression of solidarity with those affected by the crisis. Press play above to listen to the track.

"St. Teresa" is the second single to be released off of Pretty Bird, following "I Can't Stand Up Alone." The album is due for release on Sept. 7, and will be the singer's first project following the 2012 studio album Calling Me Home. After the album's release, the singer plans to embark on a U.S. tour, which will kick off on Oct. 12 in Atlanta, Ga., and span through March of 2019.
