John Mayer has been limited in his public appearances for the better part of the past year due to vocal health issues, so seeing him on 'Today' was a treat for fans. asked him if his new single 'Paper Doll' was about Taylor Swift. These days, any news about Swift is going to be highly publicized, and it wasn't helped that Mayer was slow to reply to the question.

'Today' host Willie Geist asked about the rumors, giving Mayer a choice of true or false. Mayer bought some time by acknowledging a member of the audience before coming up with his reply.

"Yeah, songwriters write songs because of people, about people. Anything someone else wrote is their reception of a song. I don't get involved with it. It's none of my business."

The issue first came to the surface in 2012, in Mayer's interview with Rolling Stone in which he stated that Taylor Swift's song 'Dear John' was "cheap songwriting". He said:

"It's abusing your talent to rub your hands together and go, 'Wait til he gets a load of this!'. It really humiliated me at a time when I'd already been dressed down."

The 'Paper Doll' lyrics that have fans wondering are:

“You’re like 22 girls in one
And none of them know what they’re running from
Was it just too far to fall for a little paper doll?”

I can't imagine this is the end of the discussion about Mayer and Swift and her relation to 'Paper Doll'. Stay tuned...
