Joe Nichols channels his inner Ronnie Milsap in the latest installment of his ongoing series of classic country cover songs. In this video exclusive, he shares what inspired him to cover Milsap's "(There's) No Gettin' Over Me."

Nichols calls the No. 1 hit from 1981 "a Ronnie Milsap masterpiece. I remember the groove when I was a kid being so simple, yet so cool. The harmonies on the song were so neat, Ronnie's enunciation was even noticeable. Of course, laser beam pitch."

The singer praises the simplicity of the song, and he admits Milsap's deceptively easy phrasing was difficult to emulate. Nichols tells Taste of Country that he worked hard to capture the feel of Milsap's original as much as he could.

"I tried to do it fairly close to what he did," he says. "Mainly not to make it about me, make it more about him and the song. That's kinda what I'm trying to do with each of them, somewhat; keep it at least close, vocally, and not take too much liberty. Kind of out of tribute to those guys and the way they sang and the way they did those records."

"(There's) No Gettin' Over Me" is the latest in a monthly series of classic covers Nichols is releasing titled Never Gets Old: Traditional Country Series, which he launched in March with a cover of Don Williams' "Good Ole Boys Like Me." He's also covered the Charley Pride classic "The Rose Is for Today," as well as Merle Haggard's "Sing Me Back Home." He's releasing a new track in the series on the first Friday of every month. "(There's) No Gettin' Over Me" is currently available for streaming and download across all digital platforms.

Nichols has also just released an original new single, "Billy Graham's Bible," from his current album, Never Gets Old.
